Dr. Luu of Gentle Care Dental of San Gabriel Valley focuses on two major aspects of dentistry: general dentistry and cosmetic dentistry. With every procedure, she determines which solutions will be of benefit for the patient for long-term dental health as well as aesthetics. Everything is done with cosmetics in mind, and this applies to all patients and procedures.
Sometimes there are situations in which a patient has a severe cavity in a tooth. The cavity may be too big for a simple filling, but not big enough to require a root canal or dental crown. In situations such as these, Dr. Luu will typically suggest an inlay or an onlay.
Inlays and onlays are restorations that are made to fit the area of a tooth that needs to be replaced. It is fabricated to fit into or over the tooth to fill a cavity or crack that may have occurred. It is a very conservative way to address certain dental situations. Inlays and onlays may be made of either amalgam or porcelain. Porcelain is more cosmetic, while amalgam may be less expensive. When the need for an inlay or onlay arises, Dr. Luu will discuss with her patient the options available and what to expect from each restoration and material.
There are situations where dental fillings or dental crowns may be best, and Dr. Luu will examine the patient to determine which solution is best for the situation. Gentle Care Dental of San Gabriel Valley typically focuses on the most conservative method available to address dental concerns, and Dr. Luu makes a point of ensuring patients are well educated regarding the options and alternatives available to them. She is focused on making her patients part of their dental care and giving them the knowledge and education they need to make the right decision regarding their oral health.

Dental Inlays and Onlays explained by Dr. Brianne Luu

At Gentle Care Dental we do conservative Onlays or Inlays, this is not a crown.
A crown takes out about 75% off your tooth structure while an Onlay takes out about 35%.
In cases where we need to do a crown, but a lot of the tooth structure is still present, then we do an Onlay.
In cases where we need to fix the way you bite, to get the ideal bite as possible and we have to fix some of the teeth then we do Onlays. This way we prep only 35% of the tooth.
