Dental Onlays Are an Affordable and Durable Option for Tooth Restoration

When cavities form, the go-to procedure is a tooth filling—made from composite resin. A tooth filling repairs the decay or damage to rebuild your tooth to its original shape, size, and health. Composite fillings work for minor cavities, but pronounced decay may need a stronger restoration. While you might consider a crown, there are instances where cavities are too large for a filling but not big enough for a crown. In these in-between cases, dental onlays from Gentle Care Dentistry in Azusa, California, are the most practical and cost-effective option.

What are dental onlays?

Dental onlays (partial crowns) repair and strengthen a damaged or decayed tooth that’s too pronounced for a traditional filling. A dental onlay treats your tooth when the damage or decay spreads beyond the cusps and includes one or more of the tooth’s outer surfaces. A dental onlay covers a larger area than a tooth filling.

While onlays can be made from several materials, including amalgam and resin, porcelain is preferred for its unmatched aesthetics. In addition, porcelain is durable and sufficiently strong to withstand the everyday chewing and grinding forces of the posterior teeth.

What to expect from the dental onlay procedure

Unlike a dental filling which is placed in one day, porcelain fillings are typically completed in two visits, with the first appointment being the lengthiest. During the first appointment, Dr. Brianne Luu carefully removes the decayed portion of the tooth. This procedure is administered after numbing your mouth with local anesthesia for maximum comfort.

Next, the dentist scans your prepared tooth.  The digital scan gets relayed to the lab to fabricate your custom-fitted onlay. During the wait for the onlay to be fabricated, Dr. Luu will  place a temporary restoration over your tooth to protect it from harmful bacteria, injury, and sensitivity.

Once your onlay is ready, you’ll come to our office for the final restoration. Dr. Luu will check the fit of the onlay, and if all is well, only will be bonded to your tooth.  The last step is to polish the onlay for a natural-looking finish. The porcelain filling blends perfectly with the natural teeth for a seamless appearance.
