What is a dental implant?

Implants are screws made of titanium that are placed into the jawbone. After the implants have healed, a dental restoration is attached to them. Dental implant placement and restoration are often done during separate dental appointments.

What can I expect from my dental implant procedure?

The procedure for dental implant placement and restoration usually starts with an examination and digital radiographs of the teeth and missing spaces. If you are a candidate for implants, that most likely means you have sufficient bone in place to hold the implant in the jaw and allow for osseointegration, the growth of bone, to occur.  A surgical date is then scheduled with the dental team.

A surgical guide will be created to help place the implants correctly during surgery. This process ensures that the implant is placed appropriately in the jawbone to function at its best. Local anesthesia is used to numb the area around the implants, and patients may also request sedation for this visit. The implants are placed into the jawbone using a special handpiece. The surgical guide helps ensure that the angle and position of the implant are correct.

After surgery, the implants will need to heal. This usually takes several months. Once healed, a porcelain crown can be attached to the implant. The type of restoration will depend on what you are using the implant for. A dental crown is commonly used to replace a single missing tooth, while a dental bridge or denture may be needed to replace multiple teeth.
