When Duarte area patients may need Wisdom Tooth Extraction

The wisdom teeth, also known as the third molars, are the final set of teeth that many patients get in their late teenage years or early adulthood. When these teeth are healthy and erupt through the gum line without any problem, they can be fully functional and benefit patients. However, they are known for being troublesome. Wisdom teeth can become misaligned, impacted, or may add to one’s risk of periodontal disease due to their placement way in the back of the mouth. Everyone has four wisdom teeth, one in each corner, and a majority of patients have them surgically removed or extracted because of one or more problems.

Dr. Brianne Luu of the Duarte area provides wisdom tooth extraction for patients who need it.

Dr. Brianne Luu of the Duarte area provides wisdom tooth extraction for patients who need it. From infection, impaction, pain, and even the possibility of ruining alignment achieved by orthodontics, patients may want to speak with the team of Gentle Care Dental of San Gabriel Valley to discuss extraction if necessary. It is not unusual to have these teeth removed because of the host of problems they can cause.

Extraction may occur in one of two ways. Oral surgery may be necessary for wisdom teeth that have not broken through the gum line. This includes teeth that have become impacted and may be the source of pain and discomfort. Some dentists may also suggest the removal of wisdom teeth if patients have had orthodontic work and it is feared that the eruption of these teeth may result in further bite alignment issues. Then Dr. Brianne Luu may suggest being proactive and removing the teeth before they become an issue.

Wisdom teeth that have already erupted through the gum line may be removed with forceps. Local anesthetics are used to ensure patients are comfortable. Patients often report feeling pressure during removal but this is minor.

After wisdom tooth extraction, patients are educated on after-care instructions to facilitate proper healing. Patients must take care of the extraction site to reduce the risk of infection or continued bleeding.
