Dentist explains what to expect following your Dental Implants procedure

Patients in Rosemead, CA are opting for dental implants to replace teeth that have been lost due to extraction, trauma, or disease. Implants have over a 90 percent success rate and offer additional advantages such as improved appearance, better comfort, crisp speech, easier eating, strength, durability, and convenience.

Dental Implants procedure

The entire procedure takes several visits to the dentist’s office over the course of three to nine months. However, once the implant is placed, it requires the same oral care as natural teeth do, including brushing, flossing, and keeping your twice-annual visits to the dentist. Dr. Brianne Luu offers tips for the days immediately following the implant surgery to ensure that your procedure is successful.

Rest – Take it easy. Implant surgery is typically pain free because you will be properly numbed. However, it is still surgery. Some patients feel as though they can resume normal activities immediately following surgery, while others may need a day to two to allow their mouth to recover.

Salt-water rinse – Rinse your mouth with salt-water to help it heal more quickly, reduce your discomfort, and keep swelling down. Add a teaspoon of table salt to a cup of warm water, swish it around your mouth, and then spit it out.

Diet – In the days just after your procedure, your diet should include soft items like yogurt. Sugary items may bother your teeth, which could be sensitive, and would require extra brushing.

Pain medication – Your dentist will likely prescribe an antibiotic to keep your mouth infection free. Be sure to following the dosing instructions and take it as directed.

Be gentle – To keep your implant clean and free from bacteria, you will need to brush it. Just be sure to take care and brush gently to avoid pulling on the stitches. If you brush and use the salt-water rinse at the same time, you will be less likely to forget either step, and it will increase the effectiveness of both.
